How to make bao buns

How to make bao buns ️

Recipe below! Bao buns are actually super simple to make and they are so tasty. You can fill them with anything. Here I had mine with sticky Chinese pulled pork (will write the recipe up soon!), but I also love prawns and chicken in bao buns. I have tweaked a good food recipe until it worked best for me with what I had at home ️Save this to give them a go!

Ingredients (6 buns):
175g plain flour
1tsp white wine vinegar or rice vinegar if you have it
0.5tsp caster sugar
15ml milk
1tsp vegetable oil
1/3tsp baking powder
1/3 tsp dried yeast
Extra oil to brush the buns
Extra sugar for the start (just a pinch)

1. Add the yeast to a pinch of sugar and 1tsp warm water until it’s dissolved in a large bowl. Add the flour, sugar, salt, milk, oil, vinegar and 65ml water. Mix until combined and if it’s too dry add a tiny bit more water.
2. Knead the dough for 10 mins on your kitchen side or until it is smooth. This may take longer if you have more dough. Put your dough back in your bowl, cover with clingfilm and leave to rise for 2-3 hours or until it has doubled in size.
3. Take the dough out the bowl and stretch so it’s flat, sprinkle on the baking powder and knead until combined for about 5 mins. Split the dough into 6 equal sized portions and roll each into a smooth ball.
4. Take the first ball you rolled (the one that has been left the longest) and with a rolling pin (use a bottle of something if you don’t have one) roll it out into a small oval that’s about the same size as the palm of your hand. Brush the side facing you with oil, then with a chopstick/pen/skewer, place it horizontally across the middle of the dough. Fold it over the dough and slide out the pen. Put your bun on an individual sheet of baking paper or foil. Repeat for them all then rest for 1-2 hours.
5. Steam your buns in batches for 8-9 mins each. Google how to make your own steamer with a sieve or colander if you don’t have one! Serve warm ️
